installed wifi on pc running xp but after switching pc off and then on again I can no longer connect to internet . The programme can no longer find a signal, I then have to delete programme and re install. It is a ralink device I am using!

I have dsl. I’d like to add wi fi. A friend is willing to give me a wireless router. Do I have to activate this through my provider? Or will it simply replace the dsl modem I’m currently using. Also, is there a particular type of wi fi router/modem I should be using?
my friend is stealing my files from my computer, we are working on a LAN network and we both are having workstation admin rights. How to prevent my friend or any other in our network from copying my files.
