A common question is can i upgrade my laptops processor? Generally the answer is no, but what actually prevents it from being replaced?
The main issue is actually getting to the processor to replace it, unlike desktop computers its not easy to remove the case, fan/heatsink and opening the catch and out lifting out the processor.
But that said and done it is possible, of course the processor needs to fit the same socket and be similar in clock speed to the one being removed, so this means it is possible to upgrade many single core processors with their dual core equivilants, on computer-adviser.com they show a processor upgrade on an Acer 5051 laptop going from a single core 2ghz processor to a 1.8 dual core, of course apart from simply swapping compatible processors we also need to consider other possible side issues such as processor heat dissipation as the one thing that cannot be upgraded is the cooling system, so if an upgraded processor generates too much heat the cooling system may not be able to handle this so then the processor may either be damaged or may throttle back and run much slower.
Although not recommended for anyone not familiar with laptop hardware, replacing your laptops processor can give your laptop a tremendous performance boost.

when we upgraded i was amazed at how much of the laptop we had to take apart, we literally had to strip the whole thing to get to the processor which was located in the bottom of the laptop, but was totally inacessible from underneath – we have now had reports from people who have upgraded to as high as 2.2 and it runs fine, we have been asking people to let us know if they do encounter any issues in terms of it failing after working fine and so far there has been no faults reported to us.
but up until this point we still never had an issue and this was around 9 months after the upgrade and leaving it on for long periods, too.
sadly the laptop we used for the upgrade is no longer with us as it was stolen from my car
