hardware is a physical port such as the ethernet network connection, USB ports, modem ports etc.
A software port - there are two common types of software port UDP and TCP - these allow applications to connect directly to one another, different applications use different ports such as Internet Browsing uses port 80, its a good idea to block any ports not in use for security reasons.
