There are two trains of thought what it comes to this question
leaving the battery in the computer will mean it will constantantly have a charge running though it using the battery all the time.
Leaving the battery out will gradually degrade the battery over time, so if its left out for too long it will completely discharge.
I subscribe more to the second of these simply becuase a charge is not always running through the battery and most laptop manufactuers offer software to increase the battery life, it discharges the battery by 1 or 2 percent and then recharges it which help improve its life.
but if you want to really give the battery maximum longevity make sure it simple does not get discharged any more than necessary and also disable anything that uses the battery when running on the battery alone, more here
